Senior Virtualization Engineer – VMware to Red Hat OpenShift Migration
Remote, some travel required (1 week every 2 months)
Contract Role

Summary:
Lead the end-to-end migration of virtualized workloads from VMware to Red Hat OpenShift in a live, production-like environment, ensuring minimal service disruption and strong operational readiness. This role is the primary OpenShift/Red Hat expert on the engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan & design migration approach from VMware to Red Hat OpenShift for existing services and code.
  • Develop detailed MOPs (Methods of Procedure) for migration and related activities.
  • Test and validate migration procedures in a controlled environment before production execution.
  • Execute live migrations with redundancy and protection mechanisms in place to safeguard services.
  • Collaborate closely with the client's internal team on:
    • Architecture and migration strategy
    • Risk mitigation and rollback plans
  • Create documentation:
    • Migration runbooks
    • Technical implementation guides
    • Knowledge-transfer materials
  • Knowledge sharing & training:
    • Educate existing engineering and operations teams on OpenShift, platform behavior, and new operational processes.
  • Operational readiness:
    • Help prepare and enable the operations team to support the post-migration environment.

 Required Technical Skills:

  • Red Hat OpenShift (primary skill)
  • Hands-on experience deploying, managing, and supporting OpenShift in production environments.
  • VMware virtualization
  • Strong background with VMware-based hypervisors and virtualized workloads.
  • Direct migration experience (must-have)
  • Proven experience migrating workloads from VMware to Red Hat OpenShift (or highly similar VMware → containerized/OpenShift migration).
  • Ability to navigate differences between platforms (e.g., “it used to be called this in VMware, now it’s called this in OpenShift”).
  • Virtualization & hypervisor fundamentals: Deep understanding of hypervisor concepts and virtual infrastructure. Focus is pure hypervisor/virtualization work, not networking, firewalls, or DBA.
  • Linux systems background:  Strong comfort in Linux-based environments (given Red Hat/OpenShift).
  • Documentation & process : Strong experience writing MOPs, runbooks, and operational documentation.
  • Experience with change management and structured implementation processes.

 Preferred Skills:

  • Exposure to ScienceLogic or other modern monitoring platforms.
  • Experience in telecom / large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with automation / scripting related to virtualization and container platforms.
